Home Reading - Starts Today

Your child is bringing home a book (at their reading level - at this point the level they are assigned is my best 'guess', as I am still assessing the students) and a data recording book. Every night read together with your child. They are in charge of the book and they should be holding the book to read it. They should be looking at the pictures for clues on what the text says and they should be pointing to each word as they read (this means they are using their reading finger). PLEASE CHECK THE YELLOW PART OF THE Data Recording Book for Strategies for helping your child read. Please refer to these rules every day you read and review what strategies they tried. Having a variety of strategies to learn how to read is important when they get stuck on a word.
Please record the information into the Data Book every time they bring home a book. If the book is too EASY - then we will look at changing the level of book. EASY means they fluently read every word - no problem. If the level is GOOD, then they may have up to 5 challenging words in the book and this level will be okay for your child.  If the book is TOO DIFFICULT, then they are not looking at the picture for clues, they are not looking at the words to read them, they are not trying any strategies and are making up the words. Please circle how they are doing in their Data Book so we can adjust the level
Any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
