THERE MAY BE A CHANCE TOMORROW THAT WE DON'T GO SKATING DUE TO THE WEATHER. I WILL EMAIL ALL PARENTS IF WE ARE GOING OR NOT.
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD HAS A SCARF FOR TOMORROW.

Language Arts: We are learning about narrative stories. These stories have a beginning, middle and end. They have characters and a setting. As well, there is a problem and usually several ways to solve the problem.
Yesterday we heard the story about Owen and Mzee (Mizae) https://vimeo.com/24175704  Ask your child to retell. Here is what we came up with together.

Math: We are continuing to review counting by 2's, 5's,  and 10's to 100. If you receive additional work in your child's agenda, please work on at home. As well, review the videos to help you!

Gym - We are loving Gymnastics. Look at our moves.
See if your child can tell you about three safety things to remember for Gymnastics.
(1. Metal, metal, don't touch the metal. 2. Of course, of course get on your house 3. Three on the tree)

Skating: Here is the video we watched before going out - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zw4NOR9vXP0&sns=em
All the kids did a GREAT job skating today.  A BIG THANKS to our volunteers too!
Here are a few pics.

Narrative Story:  Here is a story that was introduced. Please listen to it together. On Thursday, we will see if the students  can retell the story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtHjB6rRmQc

Here are some very good complete answers. Ask your child about theirs.

Agenda Message: Return 2 books (TWAS and Spelling) on Monday. Write in your T.W.A.S. (about your weekend).

Writing and Social Studies: We've been busy writing about our community that we have built. We can't wait to record on video about what we wrote and show it off during Student Led Interviews in March.

Math: We've been working hard with counting by 1's forward and backward from 20. As well, counting by 2's, 5's, 10's . We been looking on how we can show we understand a math problem, problem as well. We represent the math problem with a picture that shows subtraction or addition and use the correct math sign (+, -, =) for our math sentence.  Here are a few pics of some work.

Art: Today we painted conifers (spruce trees for example). I connected this to the fact that during our Beaver presentation we learned that beavers do not chop down these trees for their dens.  For our painting goals we learned about background, middle ground and foreground. As well, we talked about different shades of green and how to attain those shades (different amounts of water). As well we had to look for spaces between trees and the height of trees. It included a lot of concepts. These tree paintings will be posted in the hallway for next week.
Here are a few pics.

Morning Message: Can your child read this to you?

Here is a link to show you some ways you can make learning the Spelling Words at home: https://www.popsugar.com/moms/10-Ways-Make-Spelling-Practice-Fun-27333262

By Thursday, your child will see how they did on their spelling test this week. They will bring their spelling test book home to share their success. If they misspelled a word record the word on a 'special' place at home so you can review them. I will not reassess them. If they have misspelled words I will ask that their homework will be to write that word 5 times in their spelling book. SPELLING BOOKS MUST BE RETURNED THE NEXT DAY - WHICH IS MONDAY FOR US.

This week we worked with our 'Spelling Family Group'. Here are a few pics of some pairings. These groups are to help with the first few spelling activities and then students should be fairly confident to work independently.

Math: We are continuing to work on understanding story problems and how to show what we know and write a math sentence. Here are a few samples. Try telling a story at home.

Social: We've begun to answer these questions below. With this activity, we are also learning to print proper sentences (capitals, finger space, periods). We can't wait to show you the video at Parent Teacher's Interviews!
1.          What did you build?

1. I  built  a _________________________.

2.          What materials did you use?

3.          Why is your building important to your urban community?
4.          If I worked at ________, my job would be _______.

MY EXAMPLE:
I built a soccer field.  I used cardboard and metal for goalie posts. I used dry grass for the field. I added lego people playing soccer.
My soccer field is important because it gives kids a place to play and get exercise.  If I worked at my soccer field my job would be a soccer coach. I would coach kids from the community and name my team The Mazers.

REMINDERS: NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY.

Here is a reminder of what is needed for skating (Jan.30/31/Feb.1) . STUDENTS AND VOLUNTEERS MUST HAVE A HELMUT FOR THE ICE. PLEASE EMAIL IF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLES GETTING EQUIPMENT. ANYONE WHO HAS EXTRA EQUIPMENT COULD BRING IT TO THE SCHOOL IF IT IS NEEDED. PLEASE LABEL ALL YOUR SKATING EQUIPMENT.
Dear Parents

We will require 4 volunteers each time we go.
We will focus on several types of skills such as getting up when you fall, balancing on your skates, moving forwards and backwards and of course – HAVE FUN!
All students and volunteers MUST wear a helmet (NO BIKE HELMETS) to be on the ice. Students should be prepared with ALL winter wear (hats, coats, thicker mittens, snow-pants, and snow-boots).  If your child is not prepared, then they will stay back at the school.

Thursday 18 January 2018

Thursday, January 18

Agenda Message : Book order due January 31.

Social :  Check out some of our builders! Maybe some future construction workers or designers in our class!!

We also had a VOLUNTEER in our community! Thanks Emmett for volunteering to help other students help build our community. Do you know about VOLUNTEERS in your own community? Please have a chat about VOLUNTEERS.

Gym : We are moving along in Gymnastics. Here are some pics.

Expectations At School: Many of my students have been having some challenges making 'great' choices when playing with their friends. Please review the story that Ms. Goodine read to our class. Ask your child how they will contribute to make 'We Moments' better at school.

We also need to review the difference between 'Telling' and 'Tattle-telling'  Here is a video to help.

Math: We've been working hard on how to represent a number in (at least) two ways, tell a story and show a computation. Here is an example of what Grade 1 students should be able to do independently.

Spelling: Today we started our new spelling work. We are working with a partner. We work together to make sure each partner understands what to do in their spelling book and they help each other. Ask your child what the did in their spelling book today.
As part of our spelling, our morning message included knowing when to use the word 'an' or 'a' before a word. Ask your child to tell about the words below. Ask them to tell you why?

Dear girls and boys,
Today is Thursday.
Which word (a  OR  an) would be put in front of these words?

    ant
  egg
  alligator
  ostrich
   umbrella
   ant
  apple

SPELLING TEST ON TUESDAY
We had fun today spelling one of the spelling words on the kids' backs. Try it at home.

Today I showed two groups. Your child should be able to tell how these groups are sorted. What is the sorting rule?

Answer: the top group all starts with a vowel so you use an 'an' in front of it
The bottom group begins with a consonant so they use 'a' in front of it
