Tuesday, January 9

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! It's back to business!

Agenda Message For the month of January, please wear appropriate clothing for Gym class. We are doing Gymnastics. Comfortable and safe clothing would be: flexible clothing, socks, (no jewelry. no skirts or tights) ,long hair pulled back.

Language Arts (writing): I hope an envelope went home in everyone's agenda today. A recipient at home should be getting this today! Here are some of their work!

We will be finishing up on our 'Favorite Things' book this week and each student will receive a copy.
Our leaning intention is to move on to more Fiction Writing, as we've been working a lot on expository writing. We will be writing an animal story with Typical things like: beginning, middle, end, characters, setting, illustrations. AT HOME, REVIEW THESE CONCEPTS WHEN YOU ARE READING A BEDTIME STORY.

Social Studies: We are beginning a project: to create a community (an urban space like Calgary). Today we did discuss what Urban and Rural might consist of. Here are some pics to discuss.

After we closed our eyes and Mrs. Maze took us on a trip to both a rural and urban area, I attempted to draw what they saw:

We are collecting items we might need for construction of our Urban community. We need your help. We brainstormed that we may need:
small boxes
paper
cardboard
pine cones
2 liter cartons milk
meat trays
recycled materials
clay/plasticene
lego men
cars

PLEASE SEND IN ANY OF THESE ITEMS BEFORE MONDAY, JANUARY 15.

TOMORROW: BOYS CHOIR BEGINS. ALL BOYS INTERESTED PLEASE EAT YOUR LUNCH FIRST AND THEN MAKE YOUR WAY TO THE MUSIC ROOM.

Today, students were invited for an information session for the Science Fair. Many children attended and received an information package. A few students forgot their at school. Please remind them to take home tomorrow.

Math: Today we had a chance discuss several ways to count to 12 (the amount of months in the year). Your child should be able to say the months on the year (if they are having trouble please review at home). PLEASE ASK YOUR CHILD TO REVIEW SOME OF THE DIFFERENT WAYS SHOWN BELOW. THEY MAY KNOW OTHER WAYS TOO.

Reading:  Today we organized our classroom library into Fiction and Non Fiction books. Ask your child about it. Here is a simplified explanation.

Here are some great kids enjoying great books!

Many students were interested in reading more Non Fiction books, so we stocked our Classroom library!

Starting next week - SPELLING WORDS

Each Tuesday, we will begin a new list of spelling words. Over the week, we will review the words and have writing activities to work on these words. For some students, who may need some more challenging words,  I will provide some additional words (that are completely optional). Each Tuesday, we will also have a test on those spelling words. If your child misses the test on the Tuesday, please just test them at home and send in the results.
If you need to test at home, please read the word aloud, put the word in a sentence and then say the word again. When complete, parents can use a pen to check the words and parents can print the correct spelling beside any incorrect words. Please mark the test out of the total amount of words and send it in to school.
