UPDATE: WE ARE PLANNING TO GO SKATING ON THE MOUNT ROYAL RINK DURING THE DATES OF JANUARY 29 - FEB. 1. EACH STUDENT NEEDS A HELMET (NOT A BIKE HELMET) AND SKATES. PLEASE CONTACT ME IF GETTING THESE ITEMS IS IMPOSSIBLE (I WILL LOOK INTO BORROWING FROM OTHER STUDENTS). FIELD TRIP FORMS WILL BE GOING OUT IN THE NEXT WEEK OR SO. WE WILL NEED AT LEAST 2-3 VOLUNTEERS EACH TIME WE GO.

Reading: Today, Emmett did a great job - he was brave. He read the message to the class. He showed us a GREAT READING STRATEGY: You can make a smart guess of a word that you don't know and read on to the rest of the sentence. Then ask yourself "Did that make sense?". If it didn't, then go back and try it again.
GREAT JOB EMMETT!!
Here was the message. (uno = you)

Dear ladies and gentlemen,
I hope uyo are staying warm. Next week is suppose to be warmer.
From Mrs. Maze

Math: We are focusing on counting by 5's (and well by 2's and 10's) up to 100. There is a handful of students still struggling with the concept. Please practice at home as much as possible. You can print of a 100's chart and circle 5, 10, 15 ... .like we did in school. You can say it verbally. Here is a video to help you practice as well.

Before Christmas, we practice adding numbers on to 10. For example, they played a game with the Power Of Ten cards, where each student set out a 10 card and then flipped over another card (9 or less) to add to the ten. Your child should be fairly quick at adding these numbers below. Ask them:
10 + 6 =
10 + 4 =
10 + 1 =
10 + 9 =
10 + 7 =
10 + 2 =
10 + 3 =
10 + 5 =

If these are still difficult, please practice more at home. We will continue at school as well.
We have moved on to adding numbers to 9. So we play a game with the Power Of Ten cards where we used a nine card and then add on the number that you flip over. So adding 9 plus 5 can be looked at 10 plus 4 more. We did discuss other ways students may look at adding 9 plus another number. Some kids made 9 into a ten, so 9 would be a ten and then they would take away 1, if you had 9 +5. It's challenging to describe but I hope you get the idea! Other students used 'counting by 5's' to help them get to the answer too. They can easily see groups of 5 on the Power Of Ten cards, so they counted by 5's. So a card of 9+5 can be seen as 5+5+4. I do challenge them to see possible solutions in different ways.

If anyone would like some cards to use at home, please contact me.

Indoor Recess - There was a lot of creativity happening!

T.W.A.S.: We are beginning to focus on writing a 'well rounded' paragraph. We are using the analogy of a HAMBURGER. For our TWAS, we will call each part like this:
TOP BUN  (OPENING SENTENCE)- Dear Mom and Dad
This week at school , we had Gymnastics.
MEAT, LETTUCE, CHEESE, KETCHUP (DETAILS) - tell about Gymnastics
BOTTOM BUN (CLOSING SENTENCE) - tell how you felt or a closing sentence and Love...
